Alternative Formats

All information provided to students at West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech) and the Community and Technical College at WVU Tech (C&T at WVU Tech) is available in alternative formats when requested. Students requiring classroom information in an alternative format should make that request to the Office of Disability Services. Since the process of creating alternative materials can take time, requests should be made as soon as possible. The request for alternative format classroom materials (tests, handouts, etc.) will be authorized by the Disability Counselor in the letter provided to specific professors along with any additional authorized accommodations needed in that class. If you require alternative format services please contact the Office of Disability Services. Information is available on specific alternative formats, such as Closed-Captioning, Braille, and Readings for the Blind and Dyslexic.

Closed-Captioning

The Social Justice Office and the Office of Disability Services to offer Closed Captioning services to faculty at WVU Tech and the C&T at WVU Tech. This service is obtained from the main West Virginia University campus in Morgantown; currently, equipment is housed in B-17 Stewart Hall which is used to caption videotapes in the Media Resources Audio-Visual Library as well as tapes from individual faculty collections.

All closed-captioning services must be arranged through the Office of Disability Services. If the Office of Disability Services is aware that a student will be attending a specific class, Faculty members will be contacted by e-mail during the semester prior to the start of the course. Faculty members may submit their own requests to the Office of Disability Services at any time during the semester. Faculty should confirm that a captioned version of the videotape does not exist before requesting captioning of a particular film or video.

Videotapes that are captioned by West Virginia University are only to be used to support and meet the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements by fulfilling the needs of students who are hearing-impaired. All tapes that are captioned by West Virginia University are considered a supplement to the original videotape and should not be thought of as a second copy of the original. These supplemental, closed-captioned videotapes are only circulated for use by and for students with hearing impairments. All videotapes that are captioned at West Virginia University are catalogued and housed by the Office of Disability Services.

Braille

There is a cost to the academic department for this service. If you need something to be formatted into Braille please contact the Office of Disability Services. The Disability Counselor will then contact the Office of Disability Services at (304) 293-6700 or by email at: access2@mail.wvu.edu.
