Admission of International Students*

When to Apply

International students applying for admission to WVU Tech must have their completed applications on file prior to their intended start date:
    For Fall Term (August to December – 16 weeks)
Submit application by April 1.
Submit all other required documents by June 15.

    For Spring Term (January to May – 16 weeks)
Submit application by October 1.
Submit all other required documents by November 1.

    For Summer Term (May to August – Up to 12 weeks)
Submit application by February 15.
Submit all other required documentation by March 15.

Academic Credentials

In addition to the international application form, applicants to WVU Tech must provide:

  • Official academic records from all secondary and post-secondary institutions attended (showing course titles, dates courses were taken, and grades earned), and
  • Diploma(s) or Certificate(s) showing degree awarded

For international applicants from non-U.S. schools, the required supporting documentation must include: (a) the original documents or certified (attested) copies of original documents in the original language of issue, and (b) the official English translations of these documents.

For international applicants who have attended U.S. secondary schools or post-secondary institutions, transcripts must be sent directly to Tech by that institution.

Transfers from Other Colleges

Applicants who are transferring in to Tech from other colleges (U.S. or any other country) should also submit course descriptions or syllabi for all college or university courses completed.

English Language Proficiency (TOEFL and IELTS)

WVU Tech accepts the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as a measure of English language proficiency.   Tech’s College Code for the TOEFL is 5902.

Required TOEFL scores for admission to WVU Tech are:

  • Internet-Based               61
  • Computer-Based           173
  • Paper-Based                  500

WVU Tech also accepts the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) as a measure of English language proficiency.   The required IELTS score for admission to WVU Tech is 6.5. 

NOTE:  Only official score reports for the TOEFL and IELTS examinations are acceptable.  Under no circumstances will photocopies serve as official score reports.

Certificate of Health

To insure the health and safety of our campus, proof of the good health of the applicant must be provided by a licensed physician by way of the Certificate of Health.

Proof of Financial Support

Before WVU Tech can issue the document necessary to apply for a student visa (Form I-20 or Form DS-2019) the student must provide proof of adequate financial support to cover the expense of studies with WVU Tech.   An estimate of overall costs for one year of study (including tuition, fees, living expenses, health insurance, books, personal expenses, etc.) is provided in the table below.  Please note that these estimates are subject to change as tuition and living expenses may increase over time.  In addition, certain programs may have additional expenses thus requiring the applicant to show additional support.

**NOTE: Personal expenses (e.g., clothing, insurance if any, local transportation, and entertainment) not included.

Documentation of financial support can take one or a combination of the following forms:

  • If the student or student’s parents will fund the student’s studies at WVU Tech, the applicant must provide an official bank statement showing the availability of the required amount.  Bank statements can be no older than 6 months.
  • If the student will be supported by a private sponsor, the sponsor must provide a letter declaring the intent of sponsorship AND an official bank statement showing the availability of the required amount.  Bank statements can be no older than 6 months.

 

  • If a student will be sponsored by a government agency or a public or private institution, the agency or institution must provide official certification that the appropriate costs

Financial Aid

Qualifying international students are eligible for the Non-Resident Freshman Scholarship program, which effectively reduces the amount charged for tuition and fees to that paid by residents of the State of West Virginia.  Depending upon several factors, including academic major, Grade Point Average (GPA) equivalency, and ACT or SAT equivalency score, scholarship recipients can realize savings of as much as $6,000 to $7,000 (USD) per year, or $24,000 to $28,000 (USD) over four years. 

 

 
* NOTE:  All application documents become the property of WVU Tech.  Under no circumstances will they be duplicated, returned to the applicant, or forwarded to any agency or other college or university.  Admission documents of applicants who do not enroll in the college may be destroyed after one year.
